LiDAR images from drones – a new dimension of terrain mapping
Drones with LiDAR technology are changing the way we measure and understand space. Traditional field measurements? Today they can be done faster, more accurately and more safely from the air, without having to enter difficult terrain.
If you need a map, a 3D model or a detailed analysis of a surface – a drone with LiDAR will do it for you in a few hours, with accuracy to within a few centimeters.
Introduction to LiDAR technology
It is a laser scanner mounted on a drone that:
- sends thousands of pulses per second
- measures the time of their reflection from the surface
- creates from this a three-dimensional map – the so-called point cloud
This works even through bushes, in the woods or on slopes.
What benefits does it provide?
You save time – the drone will scan the area faster than the survey team
You minimize errors – results are extremely precise
You get a ready-made 3D model – which can be used immediately for design, analysis or documentation
Where does it work best?
- construction and road investment planning
- landslide and slope analysis
- as-built documentation
- Mapping of large areas or areas that are difficult to access
- urban, environmental, infrastructure projects
What is worth watching out for?
- Flying with LiDAR requires proper permits and trained operators
- LiDAR data is detailed – but also large in volume and requires proper processing
Therefore, when choosing a partner for such a project, bet on experience and technological background.
