Measuring dike terrain using a drone with a laser scanner!
Our client, HydroBIM Design Bureau, specializes in the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodologies in hydraulic engineering projects. These include, for example, flood embankments. As you know, these are structures that stretch for miles. Traditional surveying measurements for such an extensive structure take weeks or even months. Fortunately, drones can be used!
Digital surveying in HydroBIM
HydroBIM specializes in digitizing flat 2D design documentation into a 3D model, which includes detailed data on every, smallest element of the designed structure. The BIM methodology allows for the connection of multiple data sources, and the end result of modeling in BIM is the Digital Twin, the virtual equivalent of the structure.
BIM allows the project to integrate with various GIS data sources and embed the Digital Twin into a real, albeit digital, reality.
The GIS data, while up-to-date, needs to be verified for the zero-status inventory of the future development site. And this is where drones come in. The LiDAR raid and the resulting point cloud is a disproportionately better quantitative and qualitative information, compared to traditional ground survey. And then there’s the time savings! We are not talking about weeks or months, but hours in terms of data acquisition!

Tomasz Rajpold, president of HydroBIM, says:
“…using data obtained from LiDAR raids and 3D modeling in BIM, we can very accurately determine the impact of the investment on the environment. We can make a detailed inventory of the necessary environmental compensation and systematically monitor the progress of the work during the implementation of the works.”
Given the amendment to the Law on Providing Information on the Environment and its Protection (Journal of Laws of 2021, item 784), which gives greater rights to social organizations to protest the investment, good preparation of the investment in terms of environmental protection is crucial. Drones make it possible to quickly and accurately obtain complete information in this regard as well.
